The Festival:
Baba Kamo is an annual initiative organised by the Assoaciació de Professionals de la Il·lustració Valenciana (APIV) and the Fundació pel Llibre i la Lectura (FULL), with the cooperation of the Associació d’Editorials del País Valencià (AEPV) to promote illustrated books in all their forms and stages. This festival is held for the sixth year in the gothic cloister of the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC) of València (Spain), a place of outstanding historical and artistic value where the work of publishers, illustrators and storytellers can be shared, and the interdisciplinary creation can be encouraged.
The event combines an illustrated book fair with more than 30 publishing houses, bookshops and self-publishers specialised in illustration from local, national and international grounds; with a festival consisting of a program of complementary activities such as professional meetings, an international exhibition of editorial illustration, children’s workshops and training sessions to teachers and librarians, but also to the general visitor.
This edition, thanks to LIT-UP’s collaboration, the international character of the festival will be enhanced by the guests and professional activities organised by the LIT-UP project. Especially given the central theme that has inspired this sixth edition of Baba Kamo: minority and minoritised languages. A theme in which LIT-UP can provide a broad European vision and expertise.
Visitors are mainly local neighbours and stakeholders from the País Valencià, but also national and even international authors, publishers, illustrators, and the public interested in cultural events. Each edition, more than 3,000 visitors pass through the gates of Baba Kamo.

LIT-UP project:
LIT-UP is a Creative Europe project aiming at defining and implementing competitive strategies to empower publishers and authors working with less used languages in front of big players in a global context. Strategies defined will try to help them, via activities and trainings, to compete with real opportunities of survival against big languages and players working in their own markets.
LIT-UP addresses directly to the objective of safeguarding, developing and promoting European cultural and linguistic diversity and heritage as it will help the publishing sector working with lesser-used languages to improve their skills, competences and capacity to sell translation rights abroad and to promote works in international markets.
LIT-UP has developed a range of activities including trainings and workshops around Europe to boost liaisons between authors, publishers, public administrations at local, national and European level.
To achieve this networking strength, LIT-UP base this methodology in these three steps:
- Promote publishers and authors skills and competences
- Increase their expertise and relationships
- Develop robust strategies to leverage the market impact
With a duration of 42 months between 1st June 2022 and 30th November 2025 and the participation of 8 partners from 5 EU countries, LIT-UP has received funding from the Creative Europe Culture Cooperation Projects (CREA-CULT-2021-COOP)
