The 2024 edition of Durangoko Azoka, held on December 7th and 8th, was a remarkable gathering celebrating Basque literature, music, and artistic expressions. Known as one of the Basque Country’s most significant cultural events, the fair transformed the historic town of Durango into a vibrant hub of creativity and exchange.
This year’s event featured the Lit-Up “Publishers and Authors Transnational Networking and Circulation of Works” programme, organized by Euskal Editoreen Elkartea. The initiative brought together authors and publishers from across Europe, including Jedrt Malezic from Slovenia, Syds Wiersma from Friesland, and Núria Sendra from Valencia. These guests participated in round tables, discussions, and presentations, sharing their works and perspectives with an engaged audience.
The fair’s 59th edition embraced the motto “Hartzea ematea DA!”—highlighting how receiving culture enriches society and strengthens the Basque language. Visitors not only explored an array of books and music but also joined a guided tour led by Basque writer Peru Magdalena, who recounted Durango’s history, including its 1937 bombing.
The two-day event also included professional meetings, networking sessions, and a vibrant exchange of ideas among publishers and writers. Durangoko Azoka 2024 left a lasting impression, underscoring the enduring importance of Basque culture on a global stage.
